AWS Cloud Practitioner: take it first, or skip to a technical AWS exam?
AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) can cost you nothing beyond the exam: AWS charges $100 in the US (November 2026) and its Skill Builder prep plan is free. With a one-day class, a first attempt is $775 to $995. It suits people in sales, finance, project or support roles who work with AWS, and anyone starting in cloud. Most need 2 to 4 weeks of part-time study (our estimate).

Is Cloud Practitioner worth taking first?
Cloud Practitioner shows you understand what AWS offers, how security and compliance work on AWS, and how AWS pricing, billing and support work. It does not test whether you can build on AWS. AWS advises people with no IT work experience to earn Cloud Practitioner before the Solutions Architect Associate; if you already work hands-on in IT, Cloud Practitioner is optional. It earns its place when you need a credential that shows cloud literacy for a non-technical role, or a low-risk first exam. See what the Solutions Architect Associate costs.
A good fit if
- You work in sales, finance, project management or support next to AWS teams and need to follow their decisions
- You are new to cloud and want a low-risk first exam before a technical one
- Your employer wants a non-technical team to show the same baseline of AWS knowledge
Think twice if
- You already build or run systems on AWS: Cloud Practitioner is optional before Solutions Architect Associate
- Your organization runs mainly on Azure rather than AWS
- You need to show hiring managers you can design or operate AWS systems; this exam checks concepts and services, not building

What the exam is
CLF-C02 has 65 questions (50 scored) in 90 minutes, and you need 700 on a 100 to 1,000 scale. AWS describes it as suitable for people with no prior IT or cloud experience, and describes a candidate with up to six months of exposure to AWS, which it says is not required. It is weighted toward services and security:

The certification is valid for three years. AWS lists renewal by passing the current exam or by completing AWS Cloud Quest: Recertify Cloud Practitioner. AWS will stop offering the exam in Italian and German after December 31, 2026; it has not announced a replacement for CLF-C02.

Free and self-paced. AWS's Skill Builder Exam Prep Plan runs about 32 hours and is free with an account. Add a low-cost practice-exam set, such as Tutorials Dojo's, to check your timing; AWS's official practice exam needs a Skill Builder subscription.
A one-day class. The classes in the table below teach AWS's official Cloud Practitioner Essentials course in a single day with a live instructor. That suits people who learn better with someone to ask, or a team that wants to cover the material together.

Choosing a Cloud Practitioner class
If you do pay for a class, check these before you book:
- That it covers CLF-C02. NetCom Learning's page still mentions CLF-C01 when we checked, so confirm the version in writing.
- Whether the exam voucher is included. NetCom offers the voucher as an add-on, the New Horizons class does not include one by default, and Learning Tree's listing does not state a voucher, so add the $100 fee to each.
- What it adds over the free plan. The classes teach AWS's official Cloud Practitioner Essentials course, and the free Skill Builder plan prepares you for the same exam. Paying $675 to $895 buys a day with a live instructor.
- Whether practice exams come with it. AWS's official practice exam needs a Skill Builder subscription; ask whether the class provides one or another practice set.
For teams
For a sales or finance team that works with AWS, the free Skill Builder plan and a $100 voucher per person is the cheapest structured option. A one-day private class can make sense when you want everyone through the material together on one day.
