Is DP-900 worth taking before a data role? Azure Data Fundamentals explained

DP-900 is a $99 exam in the US, checked in November 2026, and Fundamentals certifications never need renewing. Learning from Microsoft's free paths keeps the total at $99; a one-day class takes a first attempt to $694 to $794. You get 45 minutes, and 700 passes. With some spreadsheet or SQL experience, we estimate 1 to 3 weeks of part-time study; allow longer if databases are new to you.

Key facts

  • The DP-900 exam costs $99 in the US and lasts 45 minutes; students and educators can book it through Certiport. (Microsoft Learn, checked November 5, 2026)
  • The skills outline was refreshed on July 21, 2026, with minor changes to data representation, Azure storage and real-time analytics. (Microsoft Learn study guide, checked November 5, 2026)
  • Azure Data Fundamentals is not on Microsoft's list of certifications scheduled to retire in the next 12 months. (Microsoft Learn, checked November 5, 2026)
  • Fundamentals certifications do not expire, so DP-900 has no renewal assessment. (Microsoft Learn, checked November 5, 2026)

Who Azure Data Fundamentals is meant for

Microsoft writes DP-900 for “a candidate beginning to work with data in the cloud”, who knows the ideas behind relational and non-relational data and the difference between transactional and analytical workloads. The credential shows that you can describe core data concepts and name the Azure services for each kind of data. It does not show that you can build or run a database. Microsoft says it can help you prepare for the Azure Database Administrator or Data Engineer certifications, but it is not a prerequisite for either. (Microsoft retired the Azure Data Engineer Associate, exam DP-203, on March 31, 2025, and points new candidates to the Fabric Data Engineer Associate, exam DP-700.)

A good fit if

  • You are new to data work and want a structured introduction to databases, storage and analytics on Azure
  • You work beside data teams as a developer, analyst, tester or project manager and need the terms
  • You are a student and can book through Certiport
  • Your employer runs on Azure and wants a low-cost common baseline before PL-300 or a data engineering path

Think twice if

  • You already query and administer databases: go straight to a role-based exam
  • Your organization runs its data platform on AWS or Google Cloud, so the service names will not transfer
  • You want to prove Power BI reporting skill: PL-300 tests that directly

Consider instead: PL-300 for Power BI reporting, AZ-900 for Azure as a whole, Azure AI Fundamentals (now exam AI-901) for AI services, or SC-900 for security and compliance basics.

DP-900 rules, format and weights

Anyone can sit DP-900: there is no prerequisite and no required experience, only Microsoft's suggestion that you know its DP-900 learning material. The proctored exam lasts 45 minutes and needs 700 to pass; it runs in 13 languages through Pearson VUE, or through Certiport for students and educators. Unlike associate exams, Fundamentals exams do not let you open Microsoft Learn during the test. Skills measured as of July 21, 2026:

DP-900 skill areas and Microsoft's weights, checked November 5, 2026.
AreaWeight
Core data concepts25–30%
Relational data on Azure20–25%
Non-relational data on Azure15–20%
Analytics workloads on Azure25–30%

The analytics area names Azure Databricks and Microsoft Fabric for large-scale analytics, and real-time analytics was revised in July 2026, so check that any third-party material mentions Fabric.

Free paths first, paid help only for gaps

Microsoft's official course is DP-900T00, Introduction to Microsoft Azure Data, listed at 1 day; its learning paths are free on Microsoft Learn. Microsoft also runs a free Practice Assessment on AI Skills Navigator (sign-in required) and an exam sandbox. MeasureUp sells the Microsoft Practice Test for DP-900, but it says the test was last updated in March 2024, before the July 2026 outline. A one-day class suits people who learn better with an instructor or whose employer pays; ONLC also points to a Microsoft On-Demand self-study version.

The only extra cost is a retake: the full $99 again, after 24 hours for the second attempt and 14 days between later ones, five attempts at most in 12 months. Microsoft's Exam Replay adds one retake to an exam purchase, but its price did not show on the page we read. There is nothing to pay to keep the certification.

Picking a DP-900 class, if you want one

Does DP-900 expire?

No. Microsoft's Fundamentals certifications do not expire, so there is no yearly assessment. The role-based data certifications you could move on to, such as PL-300, do expire each year and renew through a free online assessment.

DP-900 for a team

Because the exam is short and the training free, DP-900 works as shared vocabulary for a project team that includes non-specialists. Ask whether your Microsoft agreement covers exam vouchers before buying them at list price.
