Google Associate Cloud Engineer: when Google Cloud is the right cloud to certify in
Google Cloud's Associate Cloud Engineer exam costs $125 plus tax in the US, and renewal later costs $75 (November 2026). Google's own learning path on Google Skills is the official preparation; a first attempt costs $125 with free material, or up to $524 with a year of Coursera for the Google Cloud Engineer series. It suits engineers who deploy and operate workloads on Google Cloud. With some cloud experience, we estimate 6 to 8 weeks.
Key facts
- The Associate Cloud Engineer exam costs $125 plus tax in the US, and renewal costs $75. (Google Cloud, checked November 5, 2026)
- It lasts two hours with 50 to 60 questions; there are no prerequisites, and Google recommends six months of hands-on experience. (Google Cloud, checked November 5, 2026)
Is Google Cloud the right platform for you to certify on?
Associate Cloud Engineer shows you can set up a Google Cloud environment, deploy a solution, keep it running and control access to it. Google gives keeping a solution running (about 30%) the same weight as planning and implementing it. It suits engineers who deploy and operate workloads on Google Cloud, so the first question is whether Google Cloud is the platform you work on or want to work on.
A good fit if
- Your employer runs workloads on Google Cloud and you deploy or operate them
- You have about six months of hands-on Google Cloud work, which Google recommends
- You want an associate exam where planning, deploying and keeping solutions running make up most of the weight
Think twice if
- You have not used Google Cloud yet: get time in your own project before you book
- You want a non-technical overview of cloud rather than an engineering exam
Consider instead: AWS Solutions Architect Associate or AZ-104 if you work on AWS or Azure; AWS Cloud Practitioner or AZ-900 for a non-technical start.
Format and weighting
The exam lasts two hours and has 50 to 60 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions. There are no prerequisites; Google recommends six months or more of hands-on Google Cloud experience. Google's exam guide splits it roughly this way:
| Section | Weight |
|---|---|
| Setting up a cloud environment | ~20% |
| Planning and implementing a solution | ~30% |
| Keeping a solution running | ~30% |
| Access and security | ~20% |
Two ways to prepare
Google's own path and your own project. Google's learning path on Google Skills is the official preparation. Work through it alongside Google's free documentation and practise each exam section in your own project: Google offers free usage of over 20 products up to monthly limits, and new Google Cloud customers get $300 in free credits. Google also publishes sample questions so you can see the question format before you book.
A Coursera Plus subscription. Coursera Plus covers the Google Cloud Engineer Professional Certificate series, which gives you a structured order of courses. It costs $59 a month or $399 a year at the regular price.

Weighing Google Cloud courses against Google's own path
- Whether Google's path is enough. The Google Skills learning path is the official preparation; a paid course adds structure, not a different exam.
- Monthly or annual Coursera. At $59 a month, two months cost $118, well under the $399 regular annual price; the annual plan pays off only if you will use Coursera for more than this exam. The $239 first-year offer ends November 30, 2026.
- Where you will practise. All four exam sections describe hands-on work, from setting up an environment to managing access, so check that any course has you work in a real Google Cloud project.
- That the exam fee is extra. None of the routes in the table includes the $125 exam, and Google adds tax.
Renewal after three years
The certification is valid for three years. Google offers a shorter renewal exam: one hour, 20 questions, $75. Google also lists renewal through its training courses and skill badges, which must be completed in the certification's final year and extend it by one year.
For teams on Google Cloud
