Google Cloud certifications: Associate Cloud Engineer, Professional Cloud Architect and the order to take them

In November 2026, Google Cloud charges $125 plus tax in the US for the Associate Cloud Engineer exam and $200 plus tax for Professional Cloud Architect. Neither has a formal prerequisite. The associate certification lasts three years and the architect two, and each has a shorter renewal exam, at $75 and $100. With Google's free documentation, sample questions and practice in your own project, a first attempt costs only the exam fee.

Google Cloud routes from three starting points

New to IT. Neither exam is written for beginners: Google recommends six months of hands-on work even for the associate. Build that time first in a free-tier project, then take Associate Cloud Engineer. If you need a first cloud credential with no hands-on experience, the entry exams on our AWS Cloud Practitioner and AZ-900 pages are written for that.

Already in IT support or administration. Take Associate Cloud Engineer. Its exam guide weights setting up a cloud environment, planning and implementing a solution, keeping it running, and access and security, which is close to day-to-day administration.

Experienced specialist. If you already design systems on Google Cloud for a business, go straight to Professional Cloud Architect. Study the published case studies until you can sketch a design for each from memory, because two of them appear in every exam.

Google Cloud renewal options and current case studies

Our two Google Cloud pages record no retirement or version change for either exam in the last 12 months. What is current as of November 2026: the architect renewal exam runs 1 hour with 25 questions built around one generative AI case study, and you can take it from 60 days before expiry to 30 days after; after that window only the full exam recertifies you. The associate renewal exam runs 1 hour with 20 questions, and Google also accepts training courses and skill badges completed in the final year, which extend the certification by one year. The architect case-study files are labelled v6.1. Google's exam terms let it update content at any time, so read the versions linked from the current exam guide.

Free Google Cloud preparation

Google's exam guides, case studies and sample questions are free from the certification pages. Its official learning paths sit on Google Skills, which did not show a price without signing in when we checked. For practice, Google offers free use of more than 20 products up to monthly limits, and new Google Cloud customers get $300 in free credits. Coursera's Google Cloud series is the paid structured option on both of our pages.
